Good News: Curse Removed, Blessing Secured
Are you aware that through Jesus’ death and resurrection, all believers have escaped the curse of the law and now live under the blessing of God? Maybe you were not aware that there even was a curse of the law, so notice Galatians 3:10-12:
10 All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.” 11 Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because, “The righteous will live by faith.” 12 The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, “The man who does these things will live by them.”
The curse of the law simply means that if we rely on observing the law to make us right with God we’re actually under a curse, because no human can continue to do everything in the Law, without fail. The curse is separation from God. The reason we are under a curse is because we are trusting in our own efforts, relying on our ability to please God through obedience, rather than trusting in God’s chosen means of salvation, His only Son. In essence we have said, “I don’t need Jesus, I can obey and make myself righteous.” This puts us under a curse.
And the curse is for all people who rely on themselves and their obedience, either for salvation or for lifestyle change (what is called sanctification), for Jesus came to accomplish both of these things for us (Romans 8:28-30). If we seek to stop wrong behaviors, free ourselves from sinful strongholds through our own efforts at obedience to Bible principles, we still end up under the curse.
We can neither save ourselves nor set ourselves free from wrong behaviors by our own efforts at obedience. This is not God’s way nor His means of saving us nor making us holy.
Instead, He gave us His Son. Notice Galatians 3:13-14:
13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.” 14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit. Galatians 3:13-14
Paul is quoting Deuteronomy 21:22-23:
22 If a man guilty of a capital offense is put to death and his body is hung on a tree, 23 you must not leave his body on the tree overnight. Be sure to bury him that same day, because anyone who is hung on a tree is under God’s curse. You must not desecrate the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance. Deuteronomy 21:22-23
God taught in the Old Testament that one who was hung up on a tree was under a curse. That one would be separated from God, endure His wrath and punishment.
So come with me to a mountain called Mt. Calvary. There Jesus is hanging on a tree, in plain sight of God and man, under a curse, a spectacle of evil, dying under the wrath of God and the hatred of man. Why? “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law by becoming a curse for us.”
So do you see it friend? Your Lord and Savior Jesus Christ went to that awful tree for you. He bore your sins, He took your place, He suffered your punishment, for the purpose of redeeming you from the curse of the law. You are free of the curse, if you are a believer. You are now united with God by His Spirit and will live with Him eternally.
But that’s not all! Notice the next verse:
“14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.”
Jesus took your curse that you might get His blessing. The blessing of the Spirit is given to all who believe. Is this not doubly good news? He took your curse, you get the blessing! His Spirit now lives in you, Jesus is in you and will be forever. Isn’t this good news? Isn’t this something to worship God for?
In closing, how about telling someone else this good news? Why not just find someone and engage them about the blessing bought at the cross? Ask God to open a door for you to tell somebody this week, and I know He will answer that prayer for you. And if He does, please write in and share that with us here at Gospel Growth Ministries, we absolutely love to hear stories of how God opens doors to share the gospel.
Kelly said, “I must say that I am fully convinced that the approach we are taking is right one. Not just the right one, the only one we should take. I don’t say this just because of the wonderful bible based lessons but also because of how much the Gospel has changed me as I went through each of these lessons. I was a mentor with Setting Captives Free and from Lesson one of the first quarter of Gospel Growth Ministries, I immediately was made aware of how I had been gradually falling from a message of grace to a message of works. From there the Lord has literally caused me to fall in love with Him all over again. As cliché as that sound that is what this ministry does. It cause us to fall in love with Jesus who has so greatly loved us. Jeremiah 31:3 The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.”
Lori said, “I love this ministry! It delivers the truth of Jesus Christ right to your heart! I pray that the Lord expands this teaching to reach the multitudes of believers and non-believers ! To God be the Glory ! And yes, you may use my feedback!”
This is our desire at Gospel Growth Ministries. We want people “to fall in love with Him all over again” as this is what changes lives! Tim Keller said, “The sooner we understand that salvation has nothing to do with our behavior, the sooner our behavior changes.”
We want people to see Jesus and to know that no matter how far they have gone from Him, no matter how deeply they have sinned, Jesus holds out open arms of love and acceptance. Maybe you are one who needs to know that your sin, no matter how severe it has been, has not barred you from God’s presence. He says to you today “I paid the penalty for that sin, I bought your forgiveness and removed your curse, and opened up all of heaven for you. Come back, and enjoy fellowship again!”
If this is you, if you feel this good news keenly in your heart and soul, we invite you to come and study the gospel at www.gospelgrowthministries.org, and see if maybe God would give you a vibrant testimony like many others are experiencing.
