As I was reading a favorite book I got for Christmas this year, I came across a passage that talked about the Japanese art of Kintsugi. According to Wikipedia, “Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum.”
Through His Spirit in me, God nudged my heart to understand that this is how He treats us, His children. When we first meet Jesus, we put our faith in Him as our Lord and Savior. We turn our lives over to Him and ask Him to make us more like Him. He accomplishes this by breaking our hearts in order for us to turn from sin and live for Him.
He is the potter, and we are the clay, according to Isaiah 64:8. He melts us and makes us into what he wants us to be. This is done over and over in our lives as He changes us little by little. Each time He breaks and reforms us, we become more like Him. It is like being repaired with His treasure, which shines like the gold used in the Kintsugi method of pottery repair.
So as we continue to turn our hearts to Jesus and ask Him to make us more and more like Him, He continues to mend us with His treasures of love, mercy, and grace. We begin to shine for Him more and more here on earth. As we reflect Him to those around us, His light shines through us.
So treasure those times in your life when God is molding you once again. Know deep within your heart that another broken spot in your life is being mended by God’s hand with His great love. He will shine His light through you for others to see. You will shine like the gold used to repair a pot in the art of Kintsugi.
