Some men brought to him a paralyzed man, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man, "Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven."
Matthew 9:2
Remember, within the cultural framework, the mindset of Judaism, forgiveness, and healing demand a sacrifice! Indeed sometimes Jesus told the healed person to take the appropriate sacrifice to the temple and offer it. But not always, and not here!
Do you see the sacrifice lying beneath the surface here, a question begging to be asked?
Who is this man who claims to forgive sins? And how can He? By what mechanism does He do this?
Who will pay the price? Who will settle the sin account?
Who? The Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29). I wonder if a few followers were already piecing this together. It seems not.
How precious that we can see with hindsight the glory of the cross here!
