Lesson 24: Taking Thoughts Captive
Questions 5 and 6
All believers have divine power to demolish demonic strongholds. This power flows from the Spirit of Christ, who lives in the believer.
Friend, you can knockdown thought-strongholds by taking every thought captive and making it “obedient to Christ.” The way you defeat your enemy is not by not thinking about your problems, but by thinking about Jesus! You examine your thoughts, and if they do not line up with the truth of the gospel, if they do not speak of forgiveness and the breaking of sin’s power, you take it to Jesus and leave it with Him.
Practically speaking, as we are seeking restoration and healing in our marriages, we might have thoughts that begin to take shape in our minds. Evil thoughts. Discouraging thoughts. Even satanic thoughts. We learn to take those thoughts, each one of them, captive to Christ. We do not allow our thoughts to take us captive, rather we take them captive.
For example, if I were to have sudden thoughts of harming my spouse or myself, I would run to the cross with them and see Jesus’ blood He shed for me, and I would leave them at the throne of grace. I would remind myself that God’s Word teaches me to bless those who curse me (Luke 6:28; Romans 12:14). If I were to have thoughts of overeating, overspending or turning to alcohol for comfort, I would take those thoughts captive to Christ, seeing the cross as that which not only forgives my sin but also crucifies my wrong desires (Galatians 6:14). I would remind myself that Jesus calls me to receive my comfort from Him and His people (1 Peter 5:7; 2 Corinthians 1: 3-4). Question 5. Why is it important to take our thoughts captive to Christ and see the power of the cross crucify those thoughts?

If we would be skillful at combating thought strongholds, we must continually remind ourselves of the truth of what Christ has done on our behalf through His death and resurrection and seeking to grow in our understanding of how to apply the gospel to our lives. Daily time in the Bible and prayer is as necessary for our spiritual life as breathing is to our physical one.
Question 6. Are you spending time in Bible study and prayer daily?
