Lesson 7: Faith in Christ

Questions 3 and 4

We know we need faith to forgive as we have been forgiven, but this begs the question: how do we get the faith we need? This is the subject of our lesson today.
Please read Hebrews 12:1-2, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Question 3. Who is the source of and “perfecter” of our faith, according to Hebrews 12:1-2?

If we want to be those who forgive as we have been forgiven, we need to ask Jesus for the faith to do it. Hebrews 12 tells us that Jesus creates faith in our hearts, and He sustains that faith until the end. There will be no faith apart from our receiving it from Christ. But the good news is that Jesus is not a reluctant or meager Provider (Philippians 4:19).
Jesus literally poured out His life for you on the cross to atone for your sins. He has forgiven you for a lifetime of sin. Mercy, grace, and peace flow out to you in abundance from His cross. He has gone before you, paving the road on which you now “run your race.” He joyfully and generously gives you everything you need to run the race He has set before you.
Jesus has not only shown you how to forgive by paying your sin debt, but He has given you His Spirit to strengthen and sustain you as you live in forgiveness with your spouse. When you look to Jesus for the faith you need, you always find it because Jesus is the Perfecter of your faith. He is the origin of your faith and the ongoing supply of it as well.

Question 4 How does looking to Jesus give you the faith you need to live in forgiveness with your spouse?
