Lesson 21: Forgiveness Learned at the Cross

Questions 1, 2 and 3

Welcome back to the A United Front course, friend.
You are three weeks into the study now! I pray that you are doing well and experiencing the grace of God in your heart as you study through the lessons. I want to start this lesson by sharing a video interview that I was privileged to do. I think you'll be blessed to hear Shante's testimony of how God transformed her marriage through the gospel.

Question 1. What are your thoughts about Shante's testimony? Did you relate to any of her struggles or her victories? Please share.

Now, let us return to Colossians 3:12-14 and continue in our study:
Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. Colossians 3:12-14

Question 2. According to Colossians 3:13, how are you to forgive others?

We are to forgive others as the Lord has graciously forgiven us. In earlier lessons, we have reminded ourselves of the forgiveness we have before God because of the atoning death of Jesus on the cross. And in light of this great forgiveness we have received from God, we must forgive those who sin against us. Extending forgiveness is not optional for us as Christians, and it is not dependent upon our feelings. We forgive others because we have been forgiven by God.
Today, we will delve deeper into this subject of forgiveness by considering God’s protection which frees us to forgive, and then we will end by looking at a vivid biblical illustration of forgiveness to learn very practical ways we can show forgiveness to our spouse.
First, let’s consider Romans 12:19 (NIV): “Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord.”

Question 3. In Colossians 3:13, we are instructed to forgive those who sin against us. In Romans 12:19 NIV, what are we told not to do when others sin against us?
