Lesson 19: The Cross Provides Victory Over Sin

Questions 3 and 4

When Paul said that the gospel was "according to the Scriptures," he was referring to the Old Testament Scriptures. There are many places where the Old Testament Scriptures speak to us about victory through the cross of Jesus Christ. Let's consider a few today.
One Old Testament reference to victory through the cross is Genesis 3:15:
“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel." Genesis 3:15

Question 3. How does Genesis 3:15 point forward to the coming Messiah and show the victory promised us through Him?

The picture in Genesis 3:15 is that of the Promised One stepping on the head of the serpent to kill him. While he is crushing the snake, the Messiah would be "bruised," but through His bruising, He would be triumphant, and free those who were in bondage to the serpent's deceptive temptations. This battle happened at the cross of Jesus Christ, where He was "bruised for our iniquities" (Isaiah 53:5) while defeating the devil (Hebrews 2:14). There is victory at the cross of Jesus for all who believe!
Another famous passage that is one of the most precise prophecies of the cross of Jesus Christ in the Old Testament, Isaiah 53, ends with this verse:
“Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.” Isaiah 53:12
