Lesson 21: Victory through Faith in the Cross
Question 9
1 Samuel 17:45-51 contains life-changing truth for us. David's battle is much like our own: the devil is a giant who is much stronger than we are, much smarter than we are; he has been honing his skills against believers for ages. We would have no hope of winning a battle against him on our own.
But the "Son of David" (Matthew 22:42) came to fight the enemy in our place because He was concerned with the honor of God's Name. Jesus fought the "giant" Satan for us! He took death, the devil's own weapon, and used it to destroy the devil and bring victory to all believers.
Consider: “Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,” Hebrews 2:14
Question 9. How does Hebrews 2:14 compare with 1 Samuel 17:51?

Yes, Jesus Christ took death, Satan's own weapon, and destroyed the devil with it. Jesus' death brought victory to all of God's people, just as David's triumph over Goliath brought victory to the whole Israelite nation. Hallelujah!
Today's lesson was about faith that brings victory. David's faith enabled him to overcome the world, the flesh, and the devil of a giant. Our faith in the gospel enables us to overcome the world, the flesh, and the giant of a devil. But our victory, like David's, is really Jesus' victory that He won at the cross. As the verses, we opened this lesson with, say:
“O LORD, in your strength the king rejoices, and in your victory how greatly he exults! His glory is great through your victory; splendor and majesty you bestow on him.” Psalm 21:1,5
