Lesson 28: Words of Suffering that Satisfy
Questions 2, 3, and 4
This Samaritan woman does not yet understand Who Jesus is. She doesn’t know that Jesus is indeed much greater than her forefather, Jacob. Thirst, or longing in the soul, is always due to misunderstanding Who Jesus is and living apart from Him.
“Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:13-14
Question 2. Please examine John 4:13-14. What are the different kinds of "water” listed in these verses? Compare and contrast the different kinds of water. What is said about each?

We notice from this passage that there are two kinds of water listed:
"This water..." and "the water that I will give."
"This water" refers to the physical water, the water that was in the well. Jesus said that whoever drank "this water" would be thirsty again. That is obvious; it makes sense. We may quench our thirst with water today, but we find that we get thirsty again tomorrow and must drink again.
So, it follows that "The water I will give" must be an entirely different kind of water. Jesus said that the person who drinks the water He would give would never be thirsty again. Wow! That must be some water for it to quench our thirst eternally. To what is Jesus referring here? The next verses give us the key to understanding this passage:
“The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” John 4:15-18
Question 3. According to John 4:18, how many husbands had this woman at the well had in her life?
