Lesson 6: The Display of God’s Compassion, Kindness, and Mercy

Questions 1 and 2

Welcome to our next study of God’s character as evidenced by the cross of Jesus Christ. Today, we want to examine the mercy of God as exhibited in the death of Christ.
Let us begin today with a passage of Scripture that illustrates our subject:
“Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. 34 He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, 'Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.'” Luke 10:30-35

The story above is an illustration of mercy, compassion, tenderness, and care. The Samaritan "had compassion" on the man who was beaten and left for "half dead." In contrast to the two other religious people, the Samaritan felt tender pity, compassion, and empathy, and was moved to go and help the man who was in such bad shape. The mercy of God that motivated Jesus to go to the cross can be summed up with the words, "when He saw him, he had compassion…"
The one aspect I would like to bring to our attention is that the Samaritan exhibited love for this broken and bruised man not only by bandaging his wounds and pouring on oil and wine but also by paying for his rest in the inn. It cost the Samaritan something to exhibit mercy and compassion in this manner, and this is the picture that is shown to us in the cross of Jesus Christ.

Question 2. How is the Samaritan’s payment for the healing of the injured man like the cross of Jesus Christ?
