Lesson 7: Redemption by Blood

Question 12

Redemption is paying the price to acquire or reacquire a piece of property, person, or animal. And redemption for human beings is connected with being purchased out of slavery or bondage, and sin in general. Scripture repeatedly refers to being redeemed from death, disease, trouble, war, oppression, the rule of tyrants and the hand of enemies, the law, and from hell.
In the Old Testament, men and women longed for redemption. They were in bondage under the law, enslaved to numerous enemy nations, had trouble on all sides throughout the history of their nation, and were enslaved to their flesh and to sin (John 8:32-36). They cried out for freedom from their harsh taskmasters, they pled for redemption from oppression, from their troubles, from the hand of their enemies, from death, and hell.
The history of the nation of Israel is a picture of humankind apart from Christ today. Men and women today are mastered by their lusts, enslaved by evil desires, under the burden of sin, in bondage to their flesh, captives of the ruler of darkness. These men and women live lives of quiet desperation, and they cry inside to be set free.
The good news we have as Christians is that God sent His Son to this earth as the Lamb of God to redeem us from our sins. He died on the cross to provide redemption from the power of Satan, from demonic oppression, from the curse of the law, from sin, death, and hell. In Jesus Christ, we find redemption!
Christ has for sin atonement made What a wonderful Savior! We are redeemed, the price is paid What a wonderful Savior!

“He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” Colossians 1:13-14
“...he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.” Hebrews 9:12
While every other religion in the world teaches men to attempt to redeem themselves by their good works, only Christianity sets forth a completed redemption by the good work Jesus Christ did on the cross. He "secured an eternal redemption" with "His own blood." Now from eyes with tears and hearts with gratitude, we sing:
Redeemed, how I love to proclaim it! Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb; Redeemed through His infinite mercy, His child and forever I am. Redeemed, redeemed, Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb; Redeemed, redeemed, His child and forever I am. Redeemed, and so happy in Jesus, No language my rapture can tell; I know that the light of His presence With me doth continually dwell. I think of my blessed Redeemer, I think of Him all the day long: I sing, for I cannot be silent; His love is the theme of my song.

Do you remember your own slavery to sin, self and Satan? I sure do. I look back with tears over a life lived in the flesh, a life lived for my own glory while under the delusion and deception of sin, beset continually by temptation, and covered by shame and guilt. Oh, once we see ourselves in the light, and examine our selfish living while we were under this satanic delusion, our hearts will break and we will weep tears of sorrow and genuine repentance. Then, as we embrace our Redeemer, the Lord Jesus, we will praise God "because He has come and redeemed His people" (Luke 1:68).
Doesn't it break your heart to see the world chasing after the gods of materialism, fashion, entertainment, pornography, alcohol, drugs, food, and a host of others? Oh, how this world needs redemption. Oh, how men and women today need to weep over their captivity to sin and Satan, over their selfish and secretive living. People who are "addicted" to sin do not need step-by-step instruction; they need redemption!
Oh, if I could only give the gift of tears to the moralist who is captive to his pride and supposed self-righteousness, the religionist who is in bondage to tradition and rules, and to poor rich people who may be slaves to their arrogant attitudes and self-dependence. But I can't. Redemption is what is needed. God must redeem men and women from their lack of fearing Him, from their empty lives, their prideful attitudes, their impurity, gluttony, drunkenness, etc.
The Victorian era English preacher, Joseph Parker, once said, "When God touched my soul into life, I did not call for a Greek grammar, Hebrew lexicon, or volumes of encyclopedias, to find how the thing stood. I believe because 'once I was blind, and now I see.' The heart is sometimes a better interpreter than the understanding. What better proof do I want? 'He has redeemed my life from destruction.' "

Question 12. Can you say with Pastor Joseph Parker, "He has redeemed my life from destruction."? If yes, from what form of destruction have you been redeemed? If no, please share any thoughts you have.
