Lesson 5 – Longsuffering

Question 6

The Spirit works the capacity of longsuffering, the power to bear without murmuring, to endure without complaint, and during times of grief.

Let me point out what longsuffering is NOT.

The "martyr complex" –
“OH, I'm suffering for Jesus – look at me. You don't appreciate all I do for you. I will quietly endure, bearing my cross, even if you overlook my sufferings.”
But if you have this martyr complex, you might look like you are longsuffering. Still, you express your bitterness by complaining, internally or to others, about others' lack of appreciation.
This type of "suffering" is NOT longsuffering – this is a sinful, self-focused spirit that wants others to pity them. And if they don't – you hold a grudge and bitterness in your heart.

6. Have you asked yourself – am I merely playing the martyr, to get others to feel "my pain?" Are you holding a grudge of bitterness? The Lord has been longsuffering toward you – repent and ask for forgiveness.
