Lesson 10 – Self-control
Question 3
Listen to the Holy Spirit
This "self-control" is a "Spirit-empowered" will power. As we read "self-control," – think "Spirit-empowered self-control." It is NOT ME controlling my will. It is the Holy Spirit – leading and directing with that still small voice that says, "This is the way – walk in it" (Isaiah 30:21), and we listen to the Holy Spirit.
"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. (27) "I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them." (Ezekiel 36:26-27 NKJV)
"I will bring the blind by a way they did not know; I will lead them in paths they have not known. I will make darkness light before them, And crooked places straight. These things I will do for them, And not forsake them." (Isaiah 42:16 NKJV)
"Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, The Holy One of Israel: "I am the LORD your God, Who teaches you to profit, Who leads you by the way you should go." (Isaiah 48:17 NKJV)
"Good and upright is the LORD; Therefore, He teaches sinners in the way. (9) The humble He guides in justice, And the humble He teaches His way." (Psalm 25:8-9 NKJV)
"I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye." (Psalm 32:8 NKJV)
As we spend personal time in God's Word, as we spend personal time in our prayer closets – the Lord, by the Spirit within every believer, will lead and guide you to walk in the Spirit and not fulfill the lust of the flesh. As we humbly yield our wills by acknowledging our crucifixion to the Lord – we begin to exhibit that last quality of a "Spirit-empowered self-control."
