Day 20. Our Identity in Christ
Questions 3 and 4
To close out today’s lesson, please consider Romans 6:9. “For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him.”
Question 3. According to Romans 6:9, what has no mastery over Christ?
In the context of Romans 6, death having no mastery over Christ is the same as sin having no mastery over us. Believers have died to sin and been raised to a new life with Christ.
What Romans 6 calls us to do is match our practical life to our positional life.
“The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. 11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.”
Romans 6:10–11
In other words, you’re dead. Now live like it. That’s how to be free.
It's like retiring from one career to pursue a new passion. Imagine you worked for decades as an accountant. But you've always dreamed of becoming a teacher. So you retire from accounting and begin teaching full-time. You leave your old career entirely behind to focus on your new calling.
In the same way, when we come to Christ, we "retire" from the career of sin. Our old way of life is gone. Now we live a new life devoted fully to God; He is our new passion that we pursue. Just as a retiree never returns to their previous job, we're to consider ourselves completely dead to sin. It no longer defines us. Instead, we're alive to righteousness and the glory of God.
On the cross, Jesus broke sin's power over us once and for all. Our old selves died with Him. Now we get to live resurrected with Christ, leaving sin behind and joyfully pursuing a faith filled with purpose. What an amazing new life He has given us!
