Lesson 4 Warring Against the Flesh

Questions 4 and 5

Stand Up and Fight!

Understand that the Bible never includes details without a purpose. The Bible tells us that it was "at the time when kings go off to war" that David was not off at war but rather walking around on his roof lusting after another man's wife. God is highlighting for us a particular danger:
We often fall because we're living in "comfort and ease" when we should be at war! We are sleeping when we should be fighting. We are soldiers, and soldiers fight! The time will come when you can rest, but if you're still alive, it's time to get up, suit up, stand up and fight!

Christ our Warrior King

Now, lest we lose sight of our first foundational principle in our zeal to fight, I invite you to come with me to the cross for a moment. See Jesus there hanging in the darkness on a cross? He's fighting for you. He has been beaten and is suffering in His body and in His soul (since God has made His soul an "offering for sin" - Isaiah 53:10), and He is dying alone, having drunk the cup of God's wrath against sin (Matthew 26:39).
He looks defeated, but what is He really doing? He's winning the battle for you! He's stomping on the head of Satan (Genesis 3:15) and destroying all his work! "The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work" (1 John 3:8). While the cross seems like a defeat, it is really a victory!
Notice how the cross was the greatest victory over the most intense battle ever fought:
“When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.”
