Lesson 20 Warring Against Our Flesh - Pray!
Question 7
The Mercy Seat
Look at this powerful word:
“There, above the cover between the two cherubim that are over the ark of the covenant law, I will meet with you and give you all my commands for the Israelites.”
Exodus 25:22 NIV
This “cover” was called the “Mercy Seat”, which means that God has taken His seat in mercy and forgiveness, and from there He intends to hear sinners and commune with them. It is as if God said, “I will meet with you in mercy by forgiving your sins, accepting you, and treating you with love.”
If God had said, “I will commune with you from my throne of judgment” then we would have fled from Him, terrified that our sins would damn us to hell there to languish for eternity under God’s wrath.
But the reality is that the cross of Jesus Christ has transformed the throne of judgment into a throne of grace, and the seat of punishment into a seat of mercy.
For this reason, we can come boldly, even audaciously, right into God’s presence and ask Him for grace and mercy, ask Him for an effective battle plan, and actually receive it.
Yes, my pastor was right: if you want to know how to stop abusing substances such as drugs and alcohol, ask God about it.
I’m excited about the next lesson, for in it we will see how to pray to win our battle over substance abuse.
