Lesson 22: Washing at the Cross, Walking by the Spirit, Warring Against the Flesh
Questions 3, 4, 5, and 6
Transformed by the Cross
Scripture tells us that we are now “light in the Lord” through believing this good news, and so we are to live like it! We are to turn away from all darkness and instead live in “all goodness, righteousness, and truth” (Ephesians 5:9).
Question 3. Consider Ephesians 5:14. What does it describe that you were doing in your past life of substance abuse? What are you to do now?

I needed to wake up to let Jesus light shine. In my past life I was indeed asleep, living out the desires that my environment told me I was supposed to have. I just wanted to know who I really was and when the world gave me options that resonated with me (my flesh), I took the lifestyle and ran. Little did I know that I was putting on my own chains and shackles.
Yes, we were sleeping away in our sin, slumbering in substance abuse. But look at Jesus as He hangs on a cross, life having drained out of Him in love for you, and now entering into the sleep of death for you. He has loved you to death, breathed out His last breath that you might breathe in the Holy Spirit, given up His life for you and was put into the grave for you.
But now we are to awake and come to life, meaning we realize our perilous condition in substance abuse and turn away from it, having been raised with Christ and seated with Him in heaven (Colossians 3:1-5).
Question 4. According to Ephesians 5:17, what was our condition while enslaved to substances, and what are we to do now?

Yes, we were living in foolishness when we got drunk, high, or smoked cigarettes. But look at Jesus on the cross, as He is being treated as if He were the most foolish person to have ever lived. He took all your foolishness on Himself, He took all your sin, all of it, and died under the weight of it. This lifts it off your shoulders, frees you from it, gives you a new life and Holy Spirit power.
And now we are to understand what the Lord’s will is; that is, we are to look into His Word and discover His will for us. Foolish living is replaced by wisdom as we learn God’s will in His Word.
