Lesson 24: Turning Away from Law Slavery
Question 1
Marco Polo of Mike’s teaching: Monday 14th June 2021
But now that you know God—or rather are known by God—how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable forces? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again? 10 You are observing special days and months and seasons and years!
Galatians 4:9-10 NIV
“You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified.”
Galatians 3:1 NIV
“No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, 'Know the LORD,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest," declares the LORD. "For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more."
Jeremiah 31:34 NIV
“People who experience freedom at the cross can be tempted to return, to go back to what’s familiar, to return to law slavery:
Paul writes: “How is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable principles? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again?”
We can be tempted to go back. Why? Why can we be tempted to return to what is familiar, to law slavery, to what’s comfortable?
It’s because when we find freedom at the cross, we no longer live our lives based upon rules and laws. We begin walking by the Spirit and living by faith. And that can be a bit uncomfortable especially in the beginning. I mean under the law all we had to do was follow the rules and it did not take faith at all, did it?
Read my Bible plan? Check!
Prayed for an hour? Check!
Did not commit murder today? Check!
But living by faith in a Crucified and Risen Savior and being led by an invisible Spirit?
I mean that’s new! I might feel untethered! You see people who have been set free by believing the gospel, they are often tempted to go back to legalism, back to rules and steps and laws, back to powerless religion that enslaves people.”
Question 1: Have you ever wanted to go back? And if so, to what? Just please share any thoughts that you have about that.
