If these disciples had read and believed the Old Testament, they would have understood that Jesus’ mission was to suffer and die to rescue Israel and all who believe, from our sins, and to rise from the dead on the third day and enter His glory in heaven.
Indeed, this was THE subject of the Old Testament! It’s the main point of the entire Bible, that which is of first importance (1 Corinthians 15:1-6), the primary message of every Book, the message God gave to the church to proclaim from every Book in the Bible!
“Then Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning himself (emphasis mine).” Luke 24:27 (NLT)

Peter writes, "ALL the Prophets and ALL the Scriptures, essentially the entirety of the revealed Word of God that they had at the time. The Rabbi's had indeed memorized the entirety of the Old Testament text in order to become Rabbi's."
Now, these disciples were very familiar with the Old Testament, most had read and even memorized large passages of it. They had looked right at the pages of Scripture but did not recognize Jesus in it. It’s almost as if they were kept from recognizing Him in the pages of the Book like they were blinded to the good news of His death and resurrection.
And, friend, this is the way we are all born! We are blind to the good news of Jesus’ suffering in our place, His wounds which heal us, His blood which saves us, His death which frees us. We can be Bible scholars and seminary-trained professionals, and still miss the main message of the Bible, as it is shown in every Book of the Old Testament.
What needs to happen for us to begin to see this precious and powerful message?
“As they sat down to eat, he took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them. 31 Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And at that moment he disappeared!” Luke 24:30-31 (NLT)
