Lesson 10: Till Death Do Us (Part) Unite

Question 1 and 2

We are excited that you are continuing on and cannot wait to share today’s lesson with you. You have no doubt heard the phrase in many weddings 'Till death do us part.' And make no mistake we think this is a wonderful phrase and hope for many more years of fruit in our own marriage and ministry ‘till death do us part’. However, we would like you to reconsider marriage in this way, ‘Until death do we unite.’
Let’s begin by looking at our text for today seeing exactly what we are referring to and how ‘dying to sin’ is the key to a powerful, loving and lasting marriage.
"God’s law was given so that all people could see how sinful they were. But as people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace became more abundant. 21 So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them to death, now God’s wonderful grace rules instead, giving us right standing with God and resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 5:20-21 NLT
In light of Romans chapter 5 and the amazing grace of God, Romans 6 opens with this question.
"Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace? 2 Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it?” Romans 6:1-2 NLT

Friend, we do not keep on sinning so that God’s grace may abound. Why? Because the grace of God put our sinful flesh to death in Christ when Jesus hung on the cross. Through faith in Jesus, we hung on the cross and have died with Christ, our entire past, our old man/woman was crucified with Christ and no longer lives (Galatians 2:20). At this cross the desires of our hearts were changed because we died to our old selfish sinful self and were raised to a new life created in the image of Jesus Christ (Romans 8:29). As a result we no longer try to fulfill the desires of our old sinful nature, “how can those who died continue to live in it?”
To forget the cross in your marriage is to have a marriage that isn’t joined together by the power of God (Romans 1:16, 1 Corinthians 1:18). “Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death?” Romans 6:3
