Lesson 28 Eternal Pleasures at the Cross of Jesus

Questions 2 and 3

One of the benefits of the body of Christ is that we can share with one another (as you have above) what God is teaching us and how the gospel of Jesus Christ is affecting our hearts and changing our lives. And when we share with one another in this way, we find that not only does our faith grow but we also enjoy fellowship with one another. Indeed, there can be real value in reading other people’s views and experiences that they are having with God in His Word.
So today I want to give you a couple of quotes from an author by the name of Sam Storms, who has written extensively on the very passage that we are revisiting today (Psalm 16:11).
Please read the quotes and then answer the questions below:
“Holiness does not come merely by creating a list of moral taboos and then exerting our willpower to resist them. ‘Just Say No’ alone doesn't work. Of course, we must say ‘No.’ Please don't misunderstand me. But lasting, meaningful victory will come only if there is something more enticing to which we can say ‘Yes!’…We must fight sin with a massive promise of superior happiness. We must swallow up the flicker of sin's pleasure in the forest fire of holy satisfaction. The only thing that will ultimately break the power of sin is passion for Jesus. The only thing that will guard me from being entrapped by sin is being entranced by Jesus. In other words, the key to holiness is falling in love!” Pleasures Evermore, Sam Storms, p. 31-32

Question 2. According to the quote above, how do we get “lasting, meaningful victory” over media addiction?

Yes, rather than “just saying no” to media entirely, we get lasting, meaningful victory over media addiction by finding something more enticing. But it’s not just “something” more enticing, it’s Someone more enticing. In other words, we can’t just change media addiction for, say, drug addiction or food addiction, which might seem more enticing at the time and expect to find fulfillment or lasting joy.
Jesus, Himself, is the Someone more enticing that will provide a lifetime, and then an eternity, of lasting pleasures. He is far more enticing than anything this world has to offer. This is the point Sam Storms is making.

Question 3. According to Sam Storm’s writing above, what is the only thing that will keep us from becoming entrapped by media addiction again?
