Lesson 17 We Thirst, Jesus Satisfies

Questions 4 and 5

Sweet, refreshing, life-giving water “gushed” out of the rock that was struck. And did you know that this was meant to be a picture? It is a picture of Jesus being wounded for your transgression and bruised for your iniquity. “But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed” (Isaiah 53:5 NLT).
And out of His death flowed the life-giving “water” of the Holy Spirit. This is what we saw in our previous lesson on “living water”. The Holy Spirit flows out from the cross of Jesus Christ, as a purchase of His death in our place. Yes, Jesus literally bought with His own life’s blood your ability to enjoy God’s Holy Spirit, Who flows to you out of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for you. Out of the cross flows living water.
John 7:37-39 NLT  On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me!  (38)  Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’”  (39)  (When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.)

Question 4. According to John 7:37-39, what are we to do if we are “thirsty?”

Yes, we are to come to Jesus and believe in Jesus. Specifically, we are to come to the cross where Jesus was “struck” and died, we are to confess our sins to Him and we are to receive the Holy Spirit by putting faith in Jesus.
And this Holy Spirit is a real Thirst-quencher! He satisfies us deep inside. He has a way of flowing through us, washing us, quenching our thirst, meeting every one of our needs and satisfying our deepest longings.
So the reality is that what you and I were trying to accomplish in turning to media and becoming addicted to it, Jesus Christ accomplished for us when He died on the cross. He purchased the Holy Spirit for us and thereby quenches our thirst when we believe in Him.
Isn’t this an awesome story? It’s just one of many that point us straight to Jesus and encourage us to believe in Him and receive from Him. Are you doing so?
Tomorrow we are going to see another story that teaches us exactly how to overcome media addiction. It’s very powerful!

Question 5. Please take a second and summarize the teaching for today and explain how you are going to apply this Truth to your life. If you need help ask your mentor here.
