Lesson 4 The Importance of Seeing Jesus!

Question 5

The cross is where love flows from Jesus to us.
How we connect that message with the struggle of the student is where love flows from us to them.
We need to understand that it is a miracle of God's grace whenever anyone's heart is impacted by the message of the cross. This is where prayer really enters the picture. When I get a lesson from a student I immediately stop and pray. I might pray something like, “Oh, God, please help me ask good questions to see the real issue here. Please help me to feel the heart of this precious student, and to listen well to their answers. Help me to really understand them. Help me to feel their pain, to enter into their situation, to wear their shoes and walk a mile in them, and then to love them with my gospel response. Help me to show, in humility, how God has taught me to wash at the cross, walk by your Spirit and war against my own flesh.”
So, yes, our role here is to ask good questions, listen well and wisely, and then uplift Jesus and point to the cross. We are to do so with an eye to loving our students with this message, as we are aiming for their hearts. The gospel, if presented properly, is never mere fact divorced from feeling, never slammed down as a change of subject, but rather woven into the very experience of the student, connected to answers they give, and given with a heart full of Jesus’ love. We want to evidence the same compassion that Jesus has given us at the cross.
Consider how you can draw out the heart issues of your student; that is, ask questions, seek to understand root sin issues, draw out attitudes and feelings of your student: “The purpose in a man's heart is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out” (Proverbs 20:5).
The really cool thing about this is that it is an art and that we get better with practice, over time.
Please worship with me for a few moments, considering the deep compassion of Christ:
