Lesson 12: Warring in the Word

Questions 7 and 8

Levels of Maturity

Here we can see that there are levels of maturity in our Christian walk:
  • Little children know of their forgiveness. The first truth we come to understand, as believers, is our forgiveness purchased at the cross. We are born again and given spiritual life, and as God’s little children, we are assured that we are forgiven.
  • Young men are characterized by their strength in battle. Twice it says, “you have overcome the evil one.” Notice what has caused this spiritual growth and victory in the lives of the “young men”; the answer is given in 1 John 2:12-14.
  • Fathers are known for their relationship with God, their intimacy in knowing Him, the strength of their friendship with God.

Question 7. According to 1 John 2:14, why are young men strong and overcoming the evil one?

Strong in the Word

Do you see the absolute importance of the Word of God in our war against the flesh and the devil? These “young men” that John writes to have grown from little children and have become strong in battle, they have “learned warfare” (Judges 3:2) and are now characterized by their overcoming!
Here is what Scripture says as to how these little children grew strong in the Lord and began overcoming:
...the Word of God lives in you.”
1 John 2:14
They grew strong in the Word so that it began energizing and actuating them. Do you see the necessity of God’s Word in your warring against the flesh?

We can see this principle at work in the lives of the people in Thessalonica:
And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe.
1 Thessalonians 2:13 (NIV)
