Jesus Christ: Our Deliverer
Take note of the word in Romans 7:25 NIV, “delivers”. This word is “dia” in the Greek, and it has two main meanings: “intervening agent” and “successfully across.” This is significant when it comes to applying these truths to our lives.
When I stumble and fall in sin, Jesus Christ is the intervening agent who rescues me and delivers me successfully across to the other side and freedom.
We can see this concept illustrated in John 6:16-21. The disciples were out on the sea in a storm, and Jesus came to them walking on the water. The Bible says,
Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.
John 6:21
Friend, when the storm of sin threatens to drown you, look to Jesus for rescue. "Take Him into your boat" by faith. He is the intervening agent who delivers you through to the other side.
Yes, Jesus Christ delivers us from sin falls; He delivers us from this body of death, even as He has delivered us from the wrath to come (1 Thessalonians 1:10).
Jesus Christ: Our Advocate
Notice how Jesus does this:
1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
1 John 2:1-2 (NIV)
Jesus advocates for us, He intercedes (prays) for us with the Father. And if we connect 1 John 2:1 with 1 John 2:2, we see that Jesus “advocates” by pleading His own death in our place, His shed blood for our sins, since He is the “atoning sacrifice for our sins.”
He ever lives above
For me to intercede,
His all-redeeming love,
His precious blood to plead.
His blood was shed for all our race,
And sprinkles now the throne of grace.
Five bleeding wounds He bears,
Received on Calvary;
They pour effectual prayers;
They strongly speak for me.
Forgive him, O forgive, they cry,
Nor let that ransomed sinner die!
Summary: all believers have a new nature, a true nature that loves God and loves to do right. But all believers have flesh, sin living in us, and this creates problems for us. We all stumble and fall in many ways (James 3:2). Yet, we find that Jesus Christ is our intervening agent that delivers us clear to the other side. He died for us, He intercedes for us, He takes us clear through this life and delivers us into God’s presence as pure and spotless. Sometimes He delivers us by keeping us from falling (Jude 1:24). But if we do fall, we can trust Him to rescue us and deliver us. He is faithful; He will do it (1 Thessalonians 5:24).
In the next lesson, we will see what to do with this unredeemed flesh, and how to have the victory over it.
