Lesson 13 Warring Against the Flesh: Put to Death the Misdeeds of the Body

Question 4

When grace makes us militant against our flesh, we become both passionate and thorough in putting to death whatever belongs to it. David used the words “chased…destroyed…crushed…couldn’t rise again.”
If all I was teaching was “behavior change” through external means, such as putting a filter on your computer or cutting off Internet access, you and I would likely find ways around it. Our hearts would still be craving sin, and we would find ways to gratify our cravings rather than crucify our sins.
But when God’s grace reaches our heart at the cross, when God’s Spirit leads us, we get a heart that wants to stand up and fight! Wants to not only make peace with God but declare war against the flesh! God’s grace gives us passion and power to crucify our lusts.
Let the Scriptures encourage you to pray and ask God to give you this aggressive attitude, a heart that wants to “by the Spirit put to death the misdeeds of the body.”
Let’s continue our study in Romans 8:
Romans 8:13-16 ESV For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. (14) For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. (15) For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” (16) The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.

Question 4. How does Romans 8:14 assure you that if the Spirit is leading you, you are in the family?
