Welcome, so great to have you back to the study today!
Today, we want to see how the Holy Spirit’s role is to set us free from bondage to the flesh. By the power of the Holy Spirit, you can be free from pornography and sexual impurity of any and every kind.
It is true! My bondage to pornography and sexual impurity was severe, as I’ve told you, and yet through the power of the cross, the power of Jesus’ resurrection, the power of the Spirit and the Word, I’ve been set free. You can be, too. No matter how long you’ve been captive to these sins, you really can be free (John 8:36).
Let’s begin our study today about the thirst-quenching power of the Holy Spirit:
John 7:37-39 ESV On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. (38) Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” (39) Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
Question 1. According to John 7:37 above, what is the invitation Jesus is giving?
This is an amazing invitation to the thirsty (much like Isaiah 55:1-3), for Jesus is declaring that He can satisfy us, and quench our thirst if we come to Him.
My whole life, while trapped in pornography and sexual impurity could be described as “thirst.” I would go from one image to another, one relationship to another, always thirsting, always yearning and craving for satisfaction, yet never finding anything that lasted. Like the woman at the well who went from one relationship to the next (John 4:1-29), my “thirst” was never quenched.
Question 2. Can you identify with this analogy of “thirst” that Jesus uses? If so, in what way?
