Yes, at the right time, God sent His Son right into the midst of this poisonous world. He came from the glories of heaven to this “pot of death” in which we live, He came as the “flour,” the “Bread of Life” (John 6:48). At the cross, Jesus drew all your sins to Himself, just like the flour drew all the poison in the pot to itself. As Jesus hung on the cross, He became sin for you (2 Corinthians 5:21); that is, all the poison of lust and lying, all the toxic forms of sexual impurity, and all other kinds of sin in the world.
Please take 1 minute and watch this video!
And what was the result of God sending His Son to die on the cross as your sin offering? He purified you and made you righteous! “…that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21b). There is no more “death in the pot” for those who believe in Jesus. Jesus took your impurity and died as a sin offering, thereby cleansing you!
Notice how Jesus did this:
Hebrews 2:9 NIV But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
Question 4. According to Hebrews 2:9, what did Jesus do for you?
Jesus “tasted death” for everyone! Look at Jesus there at the cross, do you see what He is doing? He is tasting death from the poisonous pot for you, and then dying in your place! He is taking the poison of your life, the impurity, all the toxic thoughts you’ve had, your lust and deception, everything impure and unholy, and He is taking all that on Himself so you can be free of it.
Look at Jesus hanging on the cross, beaten to within an inch of His life, bloody from head to toe, wearing a crown of thorns and hanging there hardly recognizable as being human (Isaiah 52:14). He is the fulfillment of Isaiah 1:5-6 “Your whole head is injured, your whole heart afflicted. From the sole of your foot to the top of your head there is no soundness— only wounds and welts and open sores, not cleansed or bandaged or soothed with olive oil.” Do you see how He has entered into your condition and become sin for you?
Just look what Jesus has done for you friend! He has taken the poison from the pot and died to cleanse you. He has tasted death that you might live forever.
But please notice one essential truth from the story about the poisonous stew, and the solution:
2 Kings 4:40-41 NIV The stew was poured out for the men, but as they began to eat it, they cried out, “Man of God, there is death in the pot!” And they could not eat it. (41) Elisha said, “Get some flour.” He put it into the pot and said, “Serve it to the people to eat.” And there was nothing harmful in the pot.
Question 5. According to 2 Kings 40:41, what were the men instructed to do when they discovered the poison in the stew?
