Lesson 44 Warring Against the Flesh: The Lord Gives the Victory.
Questions 1 and 2
Hello friend, welcome back. So good to study with you.
Question 1. What are the three foundational principles of freedom?
We know that warring against the flesh is a spiritual battle, which is why we must walk by the Spirit so we will not gratify the lusts of our flesh. We also know that we should not lean on our own understanding, but instead look to the Lord for plans to defeat our enemies (the world, our flesh, and the devil) for it is the Lord who has supernatural power to defeat our enemies for us.
Today we want to look at an illustration of how the Lord defeats our enemies as we look to Him. God gives us so many stories in His Word, many of them to teach us how to fight our enemies according to God’s plan. Such is the story we will look at today.
In the Book of 2 Samuel, we find David’s son, Absalom, attempting to overthrow King David, put him to death and usurp his throne. David knows of this plot. “David then said to Abishai and all his officials, “My son, my own flesh and blood, is trying to kill me” (2 Samuel 16:11). But David is looking to the Lord, and God sends David a specific plan, via a messenger:
2 Samuel 17:16 (NIV) “Do not spend the night at the fords in the wilderness; cross over without fail, or the king and all the people with him will be swallowed up.”
When we walk with the Lord, He speaks to us in His Word, warns us of dangers and gives us counsel as to how to live and not die. This is how we win the battle over pornography, sexual impurity, over anger, bitterness, lying and lusting, and all the attacks of Satan. We look to the Lord, and we discover His specific plans for our victory, just as David did.
Question 2. What is the value of walking with the Lord and looking to the Lord for specific plans to win the battle, as opposed to trying generically to overcome?
