Lesson 26 Warring Against our Flesh, How to Overcome

Question 7

Imagine it: Peter, eyes on the wind and the waves, sinking into the water, given over to fear, just waiting to be swallowed up by the water. The billows are much higher than him, they are threatening to drown him, he is sinking, he is terrified!
Have you ever felt that way with pornography or sexual impurity? Like you would soon drown in it? Like it was a deep, dark abyss that would swallow you whole and take your life as you sank to the bottom? Have you felt fear and doubt, like the waves were higher than you and the pull of the deep stronger than you?
This story would teach us that this is the condition of being distracted from Jesus. "Oh you of little faith, why did you doubt?" Distraction=doubt!
So Peter cried out to Jesus, “Lord save me!” Oh, friend, here’s how to renew our faith, and get more faith. Turn back to Jesus, put your eyes on Him, look to Him, cry out to Him.
Consider how Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, asking to be spared from the cup of God’s wrath: “Father, save me...!” Yet God did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all (Romans 8:32). Why? So, that your prayer for rescue might be heard and answered with a resounding, “Yes, I will save you!” Jesus was not saved from death, so that you would be saved from sin!
In closing, please consider these words of Jesus, "He said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you." (Matthew 17:20 ESV)

Question 7. Consider Matthew 17:20. Pornography and sexual impurity is a mountain in our lives. What is faith, prompted by the gospel, going to enable you to do with that mountain?

Faith can indeed move mountains that we might have thought were there since the creation of the world. Faith can walk on water, something that is humanly impossible to do. Faith can conquer kingdoms, take the promised land, shut the mouth of lions, slay giants and overcome the world (Hebrews 11:32-38)! And faith comes to us as a gift from God, as we go to the cross of Jesus in the Word of God. Faith is the victory!
