Lesson 6: Jesus is our Kinsman Redeemer (Ruth 2:14-20)

Questions 8, 9, 10, and 11

Question 8: In the New Testament, a redeemer was someone who would buy back something that was taken from him. After creation, how did we become captive to the enemy and how were we redeemed back by God? (4:52 mark in the video):

“In our likeness, looking like us, our near Kinsman, went to the cross and shed His blood and in so doing He bought us, He paid with blood, He purchased us with His life. He gave His all. He poured out His blood, and He breathed out his Spirit giving us His all. That Redeemer has taken us back, brought us back to God. The rest of the story of Ruth is going to show us that transaction of purchase. The kinsman redeemer had the obligation to redeem a relative in serious difficulty. You and I were in serious difficulty by our sin. Our bondage left us empty and broken and bitter and we were in serious difficulty, and we had no funds to pay it back. Like the prodigal son who had left and gone away and had spent all he had, he had no funds to pay it back. We cannot pay for our sin. We could not pay if we had burned in hell for an eternity. And yet Jesus came and went to the cross for you. You were in difficulty. The Redeemer came, and put on a body of flesh and blood to look like you, becoming your near kinsman, and purchased you.” (5:35 mark in the video)

Question 10: How does seeing Jesus at the cross purchasing you back to God affect your heart?:

Question 11: Ruth was so eager to share about Boaz to Naomi: “The name of the man I worked with today is Boaz,” she said. “The Lord bless him!” (Ruth 2:19-20). We also recall the Samaritan woman at the well, who after meeting Jesus with joy, ran into town crying out: “Come see a man” (John 4:29). She left her water jar behind because now she was drinking of the living water. Are you experiencing the power of the cross, burning with the desire to talk about the gospel message of Jesus, our Redeemer, with others? (7:08 mark in the video)
