Lesson 4: The Cross Removes our Shame and Disgrace!

Question 3

This monumental nationwide circumcision of all the males took place at a hill called “Gibeath-Haaraloth” meaning “the hill of foreskins” and when it was accomplished the name of the place was changed to “Gilgal”. The name “Gilgal” means “to roll away.” Here, on the hill at Gilgal all the shame and reproach of Egypt, all their identity as slaves, their entire past was separated from them and “rolled away” from them.
So the Bible paints a picture for us of Gilgal in these following ways:
  1. It was the place where shame and disgrace were rolled away.
  2. It was the place of new beginnings.
  3. It was the place of entry into the Promised Land.
  4. It was the base of operations for all battles fought in the Promised Land.
Now, you might ask what the relevance of this is for us today.
Please read the following passage of Scripture and see the New Testament counterpart to the word “Gilgal”:
Mark 15:21-25 (ESV) And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. 22 And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). 23 And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. 25 And it was the third hour when they crucified him.

Kelly writes, "The place was called Golgatha. I am in complete awe of the Fathers wisdom  as I realize in reading this passage that hundreds of years before Christ ever entered on to the scene the Father was playing out the Gospel in the lives of His people. I love how it says in the lesson that this was the place of new beginnings, the place of entry into the Promiseland. Those words "rolled away" keeps making me think of the resurrection of Jesus and His grave where the stone was "rolled  away". Luke 24:1-2 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, When Jesus  died on the Cross and was buried in the tomb, that was the end. All was settled and done. Sin was punished. It was condemned in the flesh and the debt we owed to God was paid. But after three days of silence and the seemingly victory of Satan,  He rose from the dead, Halleluah! The stone was "rolled away" and when He walked out of that tomb all things became new for us. It marked our new beginning of freedom in the promise land of eternal life."
Karen writes, "The place in Mark 15 is Golgotha, Place of a Skull.  I love the points above that Gilgal was the pace where shame and disgrace were rolled away, it was the place of new beginnings, it was the place of entry into the Promised Land, it was the base of operations for all the battles fought in the Promised Land.  Golgotha is this for us!  All that we have in Christ is found where Jesus took our shame and disgrace, gave us a new beginning, eternal life in Him and He fought all of our battles at the Cross!"
