Lesson 14: Warring Against the Flesh: Casting Down Imaginations
Testimony and Question 8
Kathy writes, "The biblical principles of freedom taught in weight-loss courses at Setting Captives Free helped me accept that I had been washed by Jesus’ blood and that my inability to overcome my flesh would not prevent me from being saved. I learned to wash at the cross and remember that I am forgiven and accepted by God because of Christ's death on the cross and His victorious resurrection, not because of what I do.
I learned to walk by the Spirit. This course has been another of the things that God has used to help me realize that the Holy Spirit is always available to me to help me. Claiming His presence in my life means I am never alone.
I learned how to war against my flesh. Previously, I had resigned myself to not controlling my need to eat all the time. The course helped me understand that my excessive eating was an attempt to fill a bottomless need. I needed to fill my soul with Jesus, who truly satisfies me. Food was a foolish, temporary way to mask the eternal longing I needed to avoid because the emptiness without Him was painful.
Did I learn to wage war against the flesh? God eventually gave me a battle plan to fight my flesh. It was not immediate. Years of abusive eating habits led to my dependence on carbohydrates and sugar. God’s plan for me to overcome the cravings, insulin resistance, and weight gain created by this type of eating was to avoid eating foods that cause me to feel unwell (high sugar) and only eat during a specific time frame (intermittent fasting). By doing this, I took the first step toward overcoming gluttony. Following Mike's videos helped me learn to eat when hungry. As Mike taught early on in the course, warring against the flesh is not easy. Knowing that this is a battle is a huge help to me.
Since starting these courses, my clothes fit better. I feel healthier and have more energy, and my blood pressure has improved. I have lost weight and no longer feel the need to participate in the world’s methods of weighing, counting, and tracking my food. I do not need these things of the world to be washed at the cross, to walk by the Spirit, or to wage war against the flesh. However, this does not mean I can do (or eat) whatever I want. I must seek the Lord for His plan and walk in the Spirit to follow it. God helps me do this, and my body reaps the benefits."
