Sue's comment here is insightful:
"The fisherman listened to Jesus, and obeyed (even though it may have seemed illogical to them, as they were the experts as far as fishing). They followed God’s plan and the results were phenomenal. I too can get a great blessing when I heed the promptings of God and obey. I see a correlation between doing things their way (fishing all night w/ net on one side of the boat), and me doing all my different diets all my life. Neither of us getting results until we listen to the Lord’s plan."
Greetings, friend, welcome back!
In the two previous lessons, we’ve considered the power of the message (Lesson 17), the power of the Spirit (Lesson 18), and today we will learn about the power of the mind.
The power of the message of the cross is that it addresses all heart issues that we face in life - big or small. The message of Christ's cross has the power that gives life and transforms, which is why Paul focused his message to the Corinthians and Galatians on the cross (1 Corinthians 2:1-2, Galatians 3:1). And the reason the message of the cross is so powerful is that it is accompanied by God’s power, the Holy Spirit’s power (1 Corinthians 2:3-5).
To be sure, we are in a war; we must fight daily against the desires of our flesh, and the battle is arduous. Today I want us to see that our mind, our way of thinking, plays a huge role in our ongoing pursuit of the good stewardship of our bodies and getting to a healthy weight.
After Paul shows his commitment to the message of the cross, and the role the Holy Spirit plays in applying the gospel in our lives, he begins to discuss the mind, the thoughts of human beings. Let’s read together:
“The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who knows a person's thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words. 14 The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. 15 The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, 16 for, “Who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:10-16 NIV).

Question 2. According to 1 Corinthians 2:11 NIV, who knows a person’s thoughts?

Paul brings up this point about our own spirit within us, knowing our thoughts because he wants us to know that only the Spirit of God knows the thoughts of God (1 Corinthians 2:11).

Question 3. According to 1 Corinthians 2:12 NIV, what is the purpose that God gives us His Spirit?
