Lesson 9: An Important Question

Questions 2 and 3

We might initially be surprised by Jesus’ question, but we get insight into why Jesus asked it from the admonition Jesus gives to the man later that day. Jesus said to the man, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.”
It appears that this man’s malady, from which he suffered for 38 years, was sin related. Sin (our own and other’s) makes us heart sick, but sometimes, it also makes us physically sick (Psalm 38). When my marriage was in crisis, my husband and I both felt emotionally, physically and spiritually ill.
So, Jesus sees the man and addresses his sin sick heart with a challenge of sorts. “Do you want to be healed?” It’s as if Jesus is saying, “I see your heart issue, and I can heal you, but are you going to cooperate?”

Question 2. Please answer Jesus’ question as it relates to your situation. Do you want your heart and your marriage to be healed by Jesus?

Now notice how the sick man answered Jesus’ question. Instead of a resounding, “Yes, I want to be healed!” this sick man reports, “I have no one to help me. I try, but others get in my way.”

Question 3. Has anything hindered you or kept you from your healing? Please share.
