Lesson 14: Speaking the Gospel in Words of Life

Questions 1 and 2

Hello, friend, and welcome back to the A United Front course.
We ended day 13 with an encouragement to speak “words of life” to your spouse, and in this lesson, we study what it means to speak words of life.
Words are powerful. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21), and as Christians, we are called only to speak that which builds up and gives grace.

Question 1. According to Ephesians 4:29, what should characterize your conversation? Fill in the blank, “Let talk come out of your mouths, but such as is for , as fits the occasion, that it may to those who hear.”

Habitual sin in a marriage often evokes unkind words. In pain, we might lash out with unkind words. In anger, we might speak destructively and tear down our spouse with our words (Proverbs 14:1). It is a common sin struggle. But God is merciful. We can repent of corrupting talk, and God’s grace can teach us a new way of communicating (Proverbs 12:18).
We can learn to build up others with our words, but we must first address a deeper issue. Jesus explained it to His disciples this way, “The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” (Luke 6:45)

Question 2. According to Luke 6:45, our mouths speak from the abundance of what is in our _________?
