Lesson 26: Physical Intimacy: Joy and Pleasure

Question 6

I do hope you are finding your soul stirred by our pleasing theme (“My heart overflows with a pleasing theme” Psalm 45: 1a), and that your understanding of the biblical pleasure within sexual intimacy is growing.
But if you find that you don’t identify with pleasure in physical intimacy with your spouse yet, I urge you to pour out your heart before the Lord. He can restore what sin has damaged.
Unspeakable joy in sexual intimacy is the biblical example and is what God calls you to pursue in your sexual relationship with your spouse.
Friend, as we draw near to Christ and feast on His love, our view of all things—ourselves, our husbands, our marriage, and even sex—is transformed.
When we focus on the sins committed against us, we see only the ugly, the pain, rejection, and the negative aspects of our husbands and our lives. But as we fellowship with Jesus and sit at his feet, we find our sight transformed by the good news of what Jesus has done and will do for us. Where once we saw the sins against us, now we see the forgiveness and grace of Jesus shining gloriously. Where once we saw the agony of defeat and the stink of death, now we see the joys of victory and the pleasing aroma of new life in Christ.

The gospel should not only change the way we view sexual intimacy in our marriages, but it should also empower us to enjoy the gift of sex that God has given to us.
Tomorrow, we will finish this section on physical intimacy by looking at how the bride pursues her lover, and we will discover that this is a wondrous and loving art in itself.
