Lesson 26: Physical Intimacy: Joy and Pleasure
Question 5
Sadly, some might be tempted to say “my spouse is not at all like the bride or groom of Song of Solomon. Sure, I would find joy in intimacy if he/she were all these things, but mine is not so I cannot. My spouse has been impure and has destroyed any hope for sexual pleasure in our marriage.” Oh, how sad to let the devil win like this, and to refuse to live as “more than conquerors through Him Who loved us” (Romans 8:37) by reclaiming joy in intimacy.
Friend, because of Jesus’ death on the cross and His victorious resurrection, sin can be forgiven, relationships reconciled, and joy restored in intimacy. My husband and I are living proof, and we are just one couple amongst thousands who have found forgiveness and restoration in Christ. You can, too, but you must look past the sin of your spouse to see the Savior.
As we finish up our lesson, please read these passages from Song of Solomon that display the pleasure of sexual love in marriage.
As an apple tree among the trees of the forest, so is my beloved among the young men. With great delight I sat in his shadow, and his fruit was sweet to my taste. (4) He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love. (5) Sustain me with raisins; refresh me with apples, for I am sick with love. Song of Songs 2:3-5
My beloved is mine, and I am his; he grazes among the lilies. Song of Songs 2:16
His mouth is most sweet, and he is altogether desirable. This is my beloved and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem. Song of Songs 5:16 Question 5: Select one of the passages above or any passage from Song of Solomon and rewrite it in your own words as you might speak it to your spouse.
