Lesson 2 Pathway to Healing
Questions 3 and 4
The first step on our pathway to healing is humility. We must humble ourselves and submit to God in all things. We must look beyond the surface of our spouse’s sin and see that God is working, but it is easier said than done.
My first thought, when reading “humble yourselves,” was, “That’s right! My husband needs to humble himself and repent of his sins right now!” But eventually, I realized that I too needed to humble myself before God and repent of my sins. I wanted to draw near to God, but my victim mentality was keeping me from experiencing the grace of God and robbing me of the joy of my salvation.
Many want to treat those who struggle with sexual impurity like the Pharisees treated the woman caught in adultery (John 8:1-11). They publicly shamed her and wanted to stone her, but Jesus showed us that this is a wrong and ineffective approach. We cannot shame people into repentance. As Jesus quietly wrote on the sand that day, the accusers were humbled! And as they crept away from Jesus, they left the woman with the only One (Jesus) who had a right to condemn her but would not. Instead, Jesus forgave her sin and told her to go and sin no more (John 8:11).
Jesus is the incarnation of humility and showed us by example how to walk the road of humility. Philippians 2 tells us, “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!” Philippians 2:5-8 (NIV)
Our Jesus (the Lord of Glory) humbled Himself, took our sins upon Himself, died, and rose again so that we might have eternal life through Him. And Paul says, “Have the same mindset.”
We are not without sin; so, we should not cast stones, but rather walk with Jesus in humility. When we do, we draw near to God and experience the healing that Jesus has purchased for us on the cross.
Question 3. According to 1 Peter 5:6, after we humble ourselves, what does God do?
Question 4. When it comes to desiring restoration, strengthening by God, and healing, why is it important to embrace humility?
