Lesson 4 How to be a Helper

Questions 1 and 2

Welcome back, friend. Today, we are going to move forward in the love of God, in humility, and by the power of the gospel towards becoming a united front with our spouses against the devil and his schemes.
To begin, let’s consider where the concept of “A United Front” finds its origin. The husband and wife team was God’s design from the beginning; we can see this in Genesis 2:18 (NIV), The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” God declared that it wasn’t good for the man to be alone, so God created the woman to be his helper. This truth is reiterated in 1 Corinthians 11:9, which tells us that woman was created for man.
You might be thinking, “I know this already, but we are talking about sin. My husband needs to own his sin and deal with it.” It is true, Romans 14:12 teaches that each of us will give a personal account before God.
But it is also true that when we married, we became one with our spouse, and this oneness makes us responsible before God to help our spouse in all things, including overcoming sin struggles (Genesis 2:24, Ephesians 5:31).

Question 1. Please fill in the blank: “The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be . I will make a suitable for him.”

Now that we understand we can and should help our spouse overcome their sin struggles, let’s talk about ways to help.
The first and most important way to help our spouse is for us to be gospel-centered people.
Hebrews 12:1-3 will explain; please read it with me:
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. (Hebrews 12:1-3, ESV)

Question 2. According to Hebrews 12:2, to whom should we look as we run “the race” set before us?
