Lesson 5: Forgiveness: Our Sin Debt has been Paid by Jesus

Question 5

This first part of the parable is a picture of God and us. We have all sinned (Romans 3:23); we come before God with an enormous debt of sin, which we cannot repay. We deserve death and hell, but we cry out for mercy. And even though we might be willing to “work” off our debt, God knows this is not possible. This is why God sent Jesus to die on the cross.
On the cross, Jesus paid off our massive sin debt for us. “He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior…” Titus 3:5-6
It is by Jesus’ work on the cross that we are saved. The idea that our good works could ever cancel out even some of our sins is a lie of the devil. Our only hope is that we obtain mercy from God and have our debt of sin forgiven through the atoning blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.
