But as we have all experienced, we will, at times, find ourselves (or our spouse) caught in sin traps (Galatians 6:1). Let us continue in our study of the Word to discover why we Christians, at times, sink beneath the waves of temptation.
Please read Matthew 14:24-33, “but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” 28 And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29 He said, “Come.” So, Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” (Matthew 14:24-30)
After feeding the five thousand, Jesus sent his disciples on ahead of him in the boat. But the disciples’ journey across the sea was not an easy one. In our text, we see them working against the wind and caught up in a storm when Jesus comes walking out to them. At first, they are all terrified, but then Jesus speaks to them words of peace and encouragement. And Peter asks to walk out to Jesus on the water.
Dear friend, this is not merely a story about Peter sinking in a storm; it is a lesson for us all.
When we take our eyes off Jesus, we will get into trouble. When we focus on our circumstances, ourselves, our fleshly desires, anything other than our Savior, we will sink.
Our believing spouse became ensnared in sexual impurity because they took their eyes off Jesus. What distracted them is not uncommon, but it will be unique to each person. Maybe it is a stressful job, a sick child, an immoral woman or man, boredom, guilt, frustration, etc. The devil has countless “winds and waves” to swirl around God’s people, but his goal is always the same: to kill, steal, and destroy (John 10:10).
Question 4. What are some things which have distracted you or your spouse from Jesus? Please share.
