Lesson 13: Why?

Questions 5, 6, and 7

There are many distractions in this life, but in Christ, we can overcome them. Let’s look again at our text in Matthew 14 and find the solution for sinking.
Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” (Matthew 14:29-31).

Question 5. According to Matthew 14:30, what did Peter do when he began to sink?

Peter cried out, “Lord, save me.” It seems so simple, doesn’t it? And in many ways, it is. When we find ourselves sinking in any situation, we need only call out to Jesus. He is mighty to save.
At Peter’s cry for help, Jesus immediately reached out, took hold of Peter, and brought him to safety within the boat. Then Jesus raises the same question to Peter that we are addressing in this lesson, “Why?”
Jesus asked Peter, “Why did you doubt?” not because Jesus didn’t know the answer, but rather Jesus questioned Peter in love to teach Peter a vital truth: He wanted Peter to see that when we lose our focus on Christ, we doubt and fear, and sink.
All sin struggles for us Christians stem from losing focus on Jesus, which leads to doubting God (Romans 14:23). And the solution is always to look to and call out to Jesus. When we do, we will discover that He has us, too; He raises us and saves us. The solution to our doubting is to put our eyes back on Jesus where they belong.
Now notice what happened when Jesus reached out for Peter and took him safely back to the boat.
And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” (Matthew 14:32-33) The wind ceased; the storm stopped in the presence of Jesus!
Dear friend, when we find ourselves in a storm, we must cry out to Jesus, lift our eyes to Jesus and point others (husband, children, friends, everyone) to Jesus! Because as long as our eyes are on Jesus, we will be able to “walk” through the storm. And at the proper time, He will cause the storm to cease.
As we conclude our study today, let’s note one more thing from our text.

Question 6. According to Matthew 14:33, what did the disciples do after the storm stopped?

The right response to the work of our Savior Jesus is always to worship. He is the Son of God. He is the One who can calm the storm in our hearts and minds. He is the One who is mighty to save. He is the Lamb who was worthy to be slain—the perfect, spotless One who gave His life to save us.
We started this lesson seeking to understand the why of sexual sin, but we are ending it worshipping the One who is ready and able to reach into the waves of sexual sin and save anyone who calls for help.
If you are struggling today with sin of any kind, call out to Jesus; He is ready to save. I also encourage you to speak words of life and hope to your spouse today—tell him that there is hope for true and lasting freedom in Jesus. Don’t doubt; trust in God’s unfailing love and rejoice in His salvation (Psalm 13:5).

Question 7. Are you looking to Jesus to save and sustain you in your current circumstances? Please share.
