Question 7. Are you a believer in Jesus Christ? Specifically, have you looked to His death on the cross to provide the cure for your sin, just as the Israelites were to look to the snake on the pole for their cure? If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, are you now looking to the cross for continued freedom from the power of sin in your life?

Kathy writes, "I am a believer in Jesus Christ. He died on the cross to pay the penalty for my sins against a Holy God and I humbled myself before Him and asked Him to save me and forgive me. I have not been taught about looking to the Cross for continued freedom from the power of sin in my life. I now know what has been missing, and I am so hungry to learn what this study is going to teach me."
This is an important issue. Sin has One Remedy, which can be found only in the death of Jesus Christ. Our self-effort, will power, resolutions, and promises to do better mean nothing in the fight for freedom from habitual sin. Only the cross with all its power to forgive and cleanse, remove guilt and shame, and provide new life can supply us with the real and lasting solution to habitual sin.
The hymn Rock of Ages presents this "cure" very clearly:
Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in Thee; Let the water and the blood, From Thy wounded side which flowed, Be of sin the double cure; Save from wrath and make me pure. Nothing in my hand I bring, Simply to the cross I cling; Naked, come to Thee for dress; Helpless look to Thee for grace; Foul, I to the fountain fly; Wash me, Savior, or I die

My friend, there is abundant and ample evidence for believing in Jesus Christ. The cross of Christ is central to all of Scripture and has been called "the scarlet cord" that runs through every page of the Bible. It is our hope in this study to trace that beautiful scarlet cord as it weaves through the stories and wraps around the prophetic writings of the Old Testament, and as it is displayed brilliantly with clear statements in the New Testament.

Question 8. What thoughts do you have as you contemplate working through the rest of these lessons on the cross of Jesus Christ?

I hope that you are filled with anticipation, as I am, to come to the cross and to see God's glory in the death of His Son. I pray that together we would grow in our love for Jesus Christ as we examine His cross and that we would resolve like Paul both to know nothing but Jesus Christ and Him crucified and to boast only in that cross.
