Lesson 4: The Glorious Display of God’s Righteousness

Questions 1, 2, and 3

Did you know that at the cross, we see the fullest expression of the character of God? At the cross, we see His justice, His wrath and hatred, His love and pity, His righteousness, forgiveness, mercy, supremacy, authority, truth, kindness, sovereignty, power, grace, longsuffering, passion, sympathy, knowledge, judgment, and many more aspects of His character.
Please study this passage of Scripture with me, and answer the questions that follow:
“So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome. 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, "The righteous shall live by faith." 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.” Romans 1:15-18

In this short passage, we have seen that the gospel is the power of God and reveals the righteousness of God and the wrath of God.
It is clear that on the cross, Jesus Christ displayed the glory of the character of God. According to Romans 1:15-18, the cross/resurrection event evidences the power, righteousness, and wrath of God, among other things. These are the truths we will study in this lesson.

Jeff writes, "The gospel is the power of God in that it is the true story of how God came to earth in the Person of His Son the Lord Jesus Christ, and after living a perfectly sinless life, Jesus obeyed His Father and gave His life for us at Calvary in order that all our sin could be judged and punished eternally as He was our Sin-Bearer/Sacrificial Lamb who died for us!! It displays the wrath of God in this I believe in that Jesus' death on the Cross truly shows how serious sin is and how a Holy and loving God displayed all of this!"
Wendy writes, "The gospel is the power of God. No one but God had the power to bring Jesus to the cross and raise Him from the dead. It is power way beyond men. It still shows the power of God as lives are changed through believing in the sacrifice on the cross and the resurrection. It is something that is beyond men power. God poured out His wrath about sin and unrighteousness on Jesus. Sin is something very serious to God. He dealt completely with it. Sometimes i think my sins aren't that bad, they wouldn't need such a very hard punishment. Yes they do. Sin is sin and needs to be punished. And God poured His wrath about all our bad on His beloved Son to set us free and bring us to the glorious relationship with Him. This also reveals God's righteousness. He want us completely righteous, free from all sin. God is righteous and cannot be with sin together. He turned from His dear Son as the burden of all our sin was on Him at the cross."
