Lesson 18: The Cross Gives Us Eternal Life

Question 4

In Romans 6, Paul is writing to believers who had undergone quite a change. They had been set free from habitual sin and had become slaves of God; they experienced repentance. Repentance is turning our backs on sin, turning toward the Lord, and becoming captive to Him, and repentance leads to eternal life.
But Romans 6:23 tells us that eternal life is a gift of God so we can understand that we do the repenting and God does the giving. The Romans repented, were set free from sin by God's grace, and received the miraculous gift of eternal life. 2 Timothy 2:25-26 confirms that repentance is a gift given sovereignly by Almighty God. How gracious of God to turn these Romans from their sin to His Son, and grant eternal life to them.
We also notice in Romans 6:23 that death is "the wages of sin." Wages are not given as a gift, but rather as that which is rightfully due. Because all have sinned, all are legally owed the wages of their sin, which is death. But instead, God gave the wages of our sin to His Son, though Christ had not earned them, that He might give the gift of eternal life to all who believe.
“that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.” John 3:15
“For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.” John 6:40
“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.” John 6:47
“But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.” 1 Timothy 1:16

Question 4. Earlier we saw from the book of Jude that the fire which destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah was an "example" for all who refused to repent and believe. In 1 Timothy 1:16, we see that Paul is also an example. Of what and to whom is Paul an example?
