Lesson 23: The Cross Provides Fullness
Questions 1, 2, and 3
“For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10 and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.” Colossians 2:9-10
The Bible describes unbelievers as being like "chaff" (Psalm 1:4), waves of the sea, full of "foam" (Jude 1:13), and "empty" (1 Peter 1:18). These descriptions form the understanding that the unconverted are empty shells (like chaff), without substance, full of air (like foam), who live meaningless lives (futile ways). This ongoing emptiness is one of the causes of the mass of humanity rushing to forbidden relationships, drugs, alcohol, materialism, pornography, etc. Unbelievers are attempting to fill the void that is so clearly within them. And in their rush to grab all of life they can before it is gone completely, they become filled with "all manner of unrighteousness, covetousness, malice" (Romans 1:29).
Believers, on the other hand, have been "filled in Him" (Colossians 2:10)! When Jesus Christ came into our lives, He filled our hearts. Indeed, our lives are "hid with Christ in God" and "filled with all the fullness of God" (Ephesians 3:19).
Our fullness in Christ is a wonderful blessing from God, and, as we have noted many times now, the cross is the grounds or basis for all the blessings we receive in Jesus Christ. Let us now consider some passages of Scripture and their implications for the believer’s fullness in Christ:
“And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him. 21 And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. 22 And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). 23 And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take.” Mark 15:19-24
