Mark 15:22 is heart-breaking for sure. Yet we are not to weep for Christ, but rather weep for our sins, and weep in repentance (Luke 23:28). Every statement listed in this passage is full of meaning for the meditative Christian who feeds on "every word that proceeds from the mouth of God" (Deuteronomy 8:3). Every word of God is instructive and full of life for those who believe.
In this case, the word "Golgotha" is significant. Golgotha means "the place of the skull," and Golgotha's hill does indeed resemble a skull. If you look at a picture of Golgotha, you will see the "nose" and "eye sockets" and "forehead" of "the skull."
Jerusalem is said to be "the city of seven hills," and the Romans crucified criminals at many places in the city, so why did Jesus die on this particular hill? Why did God choose this hill that looks like a skull for His Son's death?
Think for a moment of what a skull is. The Greek word used by Mark is "kranion," pronounced "kran-ee'-on." It is the root word for our English word "cranium." Now we know that a cranium can be on the shoulders of a live man, whereas a "skull" is an empty head or a dead head.
Please review the following Scriptures, noting what Jesus Christ is called in all of them:
“But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.” 1 Corinthians 11:3
“And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church,” Ephesians 1:22
“Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,” Ephesians 4:15
“For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.” Ephesians 5:23
“And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.” Colossians 1:18
“...and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.” Colossians 2:10
Question 4. What do all these Scriptures call Jesus Christ?
By way of summary, Jesus Christ is "head of man," "head of the church," "head of the body," and "head of all rule and authority." Calling Jesus "the head" conveys that He is the leader, the director, the principal, the supreme authority, etc. - even as the head directs the body.
And as "the head," Jesus accomplished some significant work for the body. Please read and record what Jesus Christ did in each of the Scriptures listed below:
“...for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” Matthew 26:28
