Jesus paid our debt and set us free. The cross puts all who believe into an eternal “Year of Jubilee”, even as the Day of Atonement started the Jubilee year for the nation of Israel.
This Jubilee is “the year of God’s favor.” Now the favor of God abounds to you, because Jesus was put out of favor at the cross. God frowned on His own Son that He might smile on you. This means that God’s favor to you, purchased at the cross for you, will overcome any and every challenge you ever face. God’s favor, as He smiles on you, will brighten your life, relieve every burden and free you from every sin. And yes, God’s favor is so powerful that it can lift our dark cloud of depression.
As we close today, think through the following questions? Do you have a mountain of sin-debt that is crushing you? Jesus cancelled your debt, paid it all Himself, and you are now entirely free from it!
Have you been enslaved to some sin in your life? Jesus died to set you free. Receive it! Enjoy it! Walk and live in it! Celebrate it!
Let me encourage you to stop reading this lesson for a moment and listen to this wonderful song
I want to close with this thought today, as it will lead into tomorrow’s lesson: Jubilee means celebration! The Israelites were to celebrate the Year of Jubilee. Because God’s favor abounds mightily to all who believe, and because it has the powerful effect of bringing light into our darkness, changing a “spirit of despair” into a lifetime of praise, we are to celebrate Jesus, our Year of Jubilee. He paid our debt, He set us free.
Tomorrow we will examine the results of having our sin debt canceled and of being set free at the cross, and I think you’ll see that the work finished at the cross is the grounds, or the basis for replacing our spirit of despair with the garments of praise. This is what it has done for me, a boy growing up under the Law, crushed by a mountain of sin, enslaved by the power of sin. I believe it will do the same for you!

Harris writes, "I can see that the cross can be and should be the beginning of my thoughts and the basis of every good thing in my life."
Rachel writes, "I am a free woman, because someone who loved me very much was willling to sacrifice himself for my freedom. In the most sincere form of love, Jesus came to set my heart at rest in his presence. I love that I feel peace when I'm around him and thinking of him. I want to hold on to that peace."
Tori writes, "It makes me believe. It makes me have hope. It makes me feel so loved and it makes me want to cry out to God and say take it all Lord. Take all my pain and I thank you for your Favor! For your sacrifice that I do not have to carry this! I will meditate on this today deeply. God help me to do so and please pray that God makes this realization powerful to me. It lifts me up, it makes me feel loved and it makes me NO LONGER ACCEPT DESTRUCTION because Jesus defeated it! Christ will strengthen me, it is all because of Christ. Lord I pray with time I realize this more and not less. IJN, amen. I feel a strength and peace coming to me. Also to think of God'a favor in my life, to imagine what it's like and to imagine that no matter what happens as long as I trust Him he will be here for me."
Claude writes, "The truth about God's Word changes my heart. It reminds me that God saved me from my sin. A debt I could never pay him back for."
