Lesson 17: God’s Power Accomplishes Three Amazing Things - An Inheritance Part 3
Questions 7, 8, and 9
Let's make this practical:
You have just learned that your teenager has made some poor decisions. The school has just rung to ask you and your spouse to visit the school principal. You try to talk to your teenager but he yells at you and slams the door. You then notice a phone message from another school parent who is angry with your son and is blaming you as his parents. You think: “I can’t take much more of all this. I can’t think straight. Everyone is speaking against each other and I do not know what is the truth and what to do next! I just want to run and hide because I feel defeated and a failure as a parent”.
You can see the work of the enemy all over this situation creating confusion. Then you recall that because of Christ’s death and resurrection you have been given the blessings of God’s inheritance of His eternal provision, grace, and mercy because God sees you as His priceless adopted child. You have inherited a great wealth of the promises of God’s word, and by prayer, you can draw on the account where God has deposited all his promises.
You reach for your bible and find the promise of Isaiah 54:17 (NCV). And you start praying: Father in heaven you’ve spoken clearly and said that no weapon that is used against us will defeat us, for You have used the weapon of the cross to defeat our adversary already. You’ve said that You will show that those who speak against the truth are wrong. Lord, these are the good things your servants receive because their victory comes from You. Help me to cling to this promise, knowing every promise in Your Word is yes and amen in Jesus.”
You start to feel the peace of God settling your heart and are able by His grace to make the appointment with the school. You spend some time in prayer at the foot of the cross and know that you are alive to God, according to Romans 6:11, and have been raised from the dead with Jesus. You've looked at the resurrection of Jesus, seen His power in rising from the dead and coming out of the tomb. And you understand that, as a believer, you have that same resurrection power within you. You remember Ephesians 1:19-20 that says, "And you will know that God's power is very great for us who believe. That power is the same as the great strength 20 God used to raise Christ from the dead and put him at his right side in the heavenly world."
The Holy Spirit uses this verse in your life to empower you to resist the temptation toward despair and fear. So, dwelling on the powerful resurrection of Jesus, and drawing on your inheritance in Christ, you ask the Lord to make His power evident in your struggles at the moment. By His grace this enables you to listen and talk with your son at length that night. And at the end, you give your son gospel encouragement and you pray together. As you go to bed that night you thank God that He is sovereign over all and you lay your worries in His hands as you sleep.
